Lake Bohinj in Slovenia is absolutely one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The crystal clear, turquoise water of the lake against a mountain backdrop is just the perfect place for some photos. Being located in the Slovenian Alps, Lake Bohinj is a great starting point for some amazing hikes. You won’t get enough of the views from up the mountains overlooking the lake. There are plenty of mountain valleys too, all filled with wildflowers, wooden alpine huts and of course a mountain backdrop. If you want to fill your feed with gorgeous mountain backdrops and turquoise waters, then Lake Bohinj is the place for you to snap some Instagram photos!

Please note that directions on Google Maps aren’t always accurate for hiking trails. Follow the signs and trail markers instead for the right directions.

Lake Bohinj

The lake itself offers plenty of Instagrammable photo spots. I loved taking a photo on a little beach next to the bridge in Ribčev Laz. The bridge offers a lovely backdrop and you can see how clear the water is.

Mostnica Gorge

The Mostnica Gorge is a 2km-long gorge close to Lake Bohinj. At some point, you can get close to the water of the gorge and sit at the surrounding rocks. This area is beautiful and is the perfect Instagrammable spot. When the weather is beautiful, you’ll also see people sunbathing on the rocks. The trail along the Mostnica Gorge is easy and it’s a lovely walk.

There’s an entrance fee from Mid-March until the end of October.
Adults: €3
Students: €2,50

Voje Valley

The Mostnica Gorge ends in the Voje Valley and is perfect to combine with a visit to the Mostnica Gorge. The valley is beautiful with lots of grasslands, wildflowers and a beautiful mountain backdrop. There are plenty of alpine huts in the Voje Valley for that real European mountain feel. The walk through the valley is just stunning. There is hardly any shade in the valley, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen on warm days.

The Mostnica waterfall in the Voje Valley is another Instagram-worthy spot. It takes approximately 2,5 hours from the end of the Mostnica Gorge to reach the Mostnica waterfall but the walk along the way through the Voje Valley is beautiful. The waterfall isn’t that huge but it’s very photogenic. You can get pretty close to the waterfall, which is great.

Peč

Peč is an easy hike to a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Ribčev Laz and the lake. From the starting point of the trail, it’s a 20-minute uphill hike to the viewpoint. I loved doing this hike as an active morning activity before relaxing all day at the lake. Peč is also a great starting point for more hiking trails in the area.

Vogar

Vogar is my favorite hike I did at Lake Bohinj. Vogar has two viewpoints, the first one overlooks the eastern part of the lake and the second one overlooks the western part of the lake. The view at the first viewpoint simply took my breath away. The first viewpoint is also a paragliding take off site and the view is completely unobstructed. From up there, the lake even had the shape of a heart which I’d never noticed before. It’s a steep 1,5-hour hike, but it’s so worth it!

Follow the signs from the first viewpoint to reach the second viewpoint at the top of Vogar. It takes only around 15 minutes to reach the next viewpoint and you’ll come across a hiking cottage where you can eat or drink something. Walk past the hiking cottage and follow the signs to reach the second viewpoint. Vogar is definitely the most rewarding hike to do at Lake Bohinj and the photos will look amazing in your Instagram feed.

Pršivec

From Vogar, you can hike to another higher mountain called Pršivec. The hike takes around 2,5 hours to reach Pršivec from Vogar and it gets very steep, especially at the end. Once at the top of Pršivec, you have an amazing view over the lake and the surrounding mountains. There are lots of photo opportunities at the top. I was completely amazed by the view and I couldn’t believe I was actually this high up in the air.
